Questions Commonly asked by Parents

How does the school perform academically?

Statewide NAPLAN Tests (Levels 3 & 5) indicate that the school performs impressively when compared to other schools in the State and also against schools with similar demographics (commonly called Like Schools). The NAPLAN Tests assess students in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Numeracy and Measurement. Trend data over recent years indicates that in most cases, Hughesdale PS out performs both the State and Like Schools in these key curriculum areas.

How does the school address student safety?

During recess breaks there are always three teachers supervising the yard. Although the student enrolment doesn’t require three teachers to be on yard duty, the size of the playground does. Students are instructed not to play near boundaries or blind spots. Yard duty teachers are to question any unknown person in the yard who is not wearing an official visitor’s badge. Yard duty teachers wear brightly coloured fluorescent vests for easy visibility. During teaching time all external doors apart from the main door (Brine St.) are locked. This requires visitors to enter by the main door, which is directly in front of the General Office and Principal’s Office. All visitors are required to sign in on arrival. (See Student and Staff Safety Policy included in this information pack)

How does the school handle the issues of discipline and bullying?

The school has worked hard in these areas in recent years with excellent results. We have high standards for student behaviour and all classes follow the ‘Assertive Discipline’ approach. This approach basically sets out why we need rules, what they are and what happens if you break them. This management approach applies to both inside and outside the classroom. Consequences are graded in severity, with emphasis on students being accountable and learning to take responsibility for their behaviour. The school has an effective ‘Anti-Bullying’ Policy in place and a copy can be made available to you on request. This policy has proved to be a very effective in terms of giving all students strategies in order to deal with a range of bully-type situations and in identifying bullies and modifying their behaviour. The bottom line of the Student Management Policy is that all students at Hughesdale come to school to learn in a happy and safe environment, free from all forms of intimidation, bullying or harassment.

‘A school with Parental Approval’

As Principal, I always encourage parents to tour a number of schools in their area and to talk personally with the Principal about what their school can offer to meet the needs of their child. I also believe it is important to talk to the clients – in this case the parents who currently have their children at our school. I’m sure our parents will give you an accurate and honest assessment of what Hughesdale Primary School can offer your child and your family.

Nothing sells like a satisfied parent
Word of mouth is the school’s most effective marketing tool
Would you like to talk to some parents who currently have their children at the school?
Why did they choose Hughesdale Primary School and are they satisfied?

Sometimes talking to another parent can fill that gap of uncertainty and provide reassurance. Many of our parents are more than happy to talk to you about what the school has to offer. The following parents would be more than happy to talk to you:

Junior School (Foundation to Level 3)

Jacqui Corben - Ph. 0488 303 002

Middle School (Levels 5)

Kirsten Williams - Ph. 0474 263 896
